Cyber cover is dense and technical enough that a generalist commercial broker often cannot properly interrogate what a policy does and does not cover. The right broker matters here more than in most other lines.
A good cyber insurance broker does more than find you the cheapest premium, they should be able to explain the technical exclusions in plain terms, challenge insurers on sub-limits that do not match your actual risk, and know which insurers genuinely specialise in your sector versus which ones simply offer a bolt-on cyber extension.
A useful test: Ask a prospective broker to explain, in their own words, the difference between a policy's aggregate limit and its ransomware sub-limit. If they cannot answer clearly, that is a signal to look elsewhere for this specific line of cover.
The real value of a good cyber broker often only becomes visible during a claim, when technical wording disputes over what counts as a "notifiable incident" or whether a specific attack vector is covered can genuinely determine whether a claim pays out.
